Emma Hartvig (1990, Sweden)

Emma Hartvig works with photography to create images that inhabit the space between memory, myth, and self-invention. Drawing on cinematic language, painterly traditions, and autobiographical experience, she constructs photographs that function less as documents than as reflections of inner life.

Across portraits, staged narratives, and landscapes, Hartvig explores how people construct stories about themselves in order to navigate life, loss, longing, and change. Her subjects move through dreamlike spaces where identity remains fluid and reality slips into fiction. Rooted in themes of solitude, escapism, reinvention, female identity and self-mythology, her work examines the fragile boundary between who we are and who we imagine ourselves to be.

Born 1990 in Sweden, Hartvig moved to London in her late teens, and completed a BA in Photography at the University of the Arts in 2014. She has since lived and worked in Paris and Berlin, and is currently based in Vienna. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions at FAS44 Gallery and The Hulett Collection in the United States, as well as solo and group presentations in Paris, Berlin, London, Milan, Venice & Vienna. She is included in Rizzoli’s Pools (2020) and Hatje Cantz’s The Swimming Pool in Photography (2017). Her work has been written about in L’Oeil de la Photographie, Fisheye Magazine, Die Zeit, Il Giornale dell’Arte, C41, and AnOther Magazine. She has received the Julia Margaret Cameron Award, the IPA, and the Aesthetica Art Prize and her work is held in several private and public collections, including the Sixteen Photography Collection.

Emma Hartvig nutzt die Fotografie, um Bilder zu erschaffen, die sich im Raum zwischen Erinnerung, Mythos und Selbsterfindung bewegen. Sich auf filmische Sprache, malerische Traditionen und autobiografische Erfahrungen stützend, konstruiert sie Fotografien, die weniger als Dokumente denn als Reflexionen des Innenlebens fungieren.

In Portraits, inszenierten Erzählungen und Landschaften untersucht Hartvig, wie Menschen Geschichten über sich selbst konstruieren, um durch das Leben, Verlust, Sehnsucht und Veränderung zu navigieren. Ihre Motive bewegen sich durch traumähnliche Räume, in denen die Identität im Fluss bleibt und die Realität in die Fiktion abgleitet. Verwurzelt in Themen wie Einsamkeit, Eskapismus, Neuerfindung, weibliche Identität und Selbstmythologisierung, untersucht ihr Werk die fragile Grenze zwischen dem, wer wir sind, und dem, wer wir zu sein glauben.

Emma Hartvig wurde 1990 in Schweden geboren, zog in ihren späten Teenagerjahren nach London und schloss 2014 ein Bachelorstudium (BA) in Fotografie an der University of the Arts ab. Seitdem hat sie in Paris und Berlin gelebt und gearbeitet und hat derzeit ihren Lebensmittelpunkt in Wien. Ihre Arbeiten wurden international ausgestellt, darunter Einzelausstellungen in der FAS44 Gallery und bei The Hulett Collection in den USA sowie Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Paris, Berlin, London, Mailand, Venedig und Wien. Sie ist in Rizzolis Pools (2020) und Hatje Cantz' The Swimming Pool in Photography (2017) vertreten. Über ihre Arbeit wurde unter anderem in L’Oeil de la Photographie, Fisheye Magazine, Die Zeit, Il Giornale dell’Arte, C41 und AnOther Magazine geschrieben.
